SQE1 guide

SQE vs LPC — which route should you take?

For new entrants in 2026 the answer is short: the SQE is the only route. The LPC is closing to new entrants and its transitional window runs to 2032. But if you're deciding between finishing an existing LPC place, switching, or planning as a non-law graduate, the two routes still deserve a proper comparison.

Availability in 2026

SQE: the standard route for anyone starting from scratch. LPC: only available under transitional arrangements to candidates who began qualifying law study before 21 September 2021. The transitional window closes fully by 2032.

Format and assessment

LPC: nine months full-time, coursework and closed-book exams delivered and marked by your provider across skills and electives. SQE: two centralised exams marked nationally by the SRA — SQE1 (360 MCQs across two days) and SQE2 (16 skills stations). The SQE is assessment-only; you can prepare however you like.

Cost

LPC: £13k–£17k tuition. SQE: £1,888 for SQE1 + £2,902 for SQE2 = £4,790 in exam fees, plus optional prep courses at £3k–£16k. Self-studying the SQE with a question bank and flashcards is a fraction of the LPC cost.

Employer preference

Big City firms have moved to SQE for new intake. Regional and high-street firms accept both while the LPC window remains open. From 2032 the LPC will no longer route to admission.

Which route should you actually take?

New candidates in 2026: SQE. LPC-in-progress candidates: finish the LPC — you'll qualify faster than switching. Non-law graduates in 2026: SQE with a PGDL or self-directed foundation.

FAQs

Can I still do the LPC in 2026?
Only if you began qualifying law study before 21 September 2021 under transitional arrangements.
Is the SQE cheaper than the LPC?
Exam fees are lower. Full prep-course packages can approach LPC tuition. Self-study is where SQE candidates save the most.
Which is harder?
Different mechanics. LPC is coursework and skills stamina across nine months. SQE1 is high-volume MCQ recall under strict time pressure across two days.
Do employers prefer LPC or SQE?
Employers hiring new trainees now default to SQE. LPC is accepted while transitional arrangements last.
