ACCA SBR guide

How to pass ACCA SBR first time.

ACCA Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) is a 3 hour 15 minute Strategic Professional paper with a pass rate around 45–50%. It assumes strong FR knowledge and adds group accounts, complex standards, ethics, and current issues. The exam is 100% written and the examiner rewards well-structured technical application. Here is the plan.

Rebuild your FR foundation first

SBR builds directly on FR. If your FR is rusty, spend the first two weeks revisiting consolidations, financial instruments, leases, revenue, deferred tax, and impairment. These are the standards that appear repeatedly in SBR at a higher level of complexity.

Group accounts are non-negotiable

Group-statement questions are usually the largest single mark item. You must be able to consolidate a statement of profit or loss, a statement of financial position, and a statement of changes in equity. Practise at least one full consolidation every week. Workings must be clear and complete — method marks are significant.

Ethics and current issues

SBR uniquely tests ethical behaviour and current issues in financial reporting. Read the examiner's articles on current issues in the three months before the exam. Ethics questions are not abstract — they ask you to apply the conceptual framework and specific standards to a scenario where judgment is needed.

Written technique for 25-mark questions

SBR questions are 25 marks each. Read the requirement carefully — it often tells you which standards to apply. Plan your answer with headings matching the requirements. Use definitions, recognition criteria, measurement rules, and application to the scenario. Do not dump everything you know about a standard.

FAQs

What is the ACCA SBR pass rate?
Around 45–50% per sitting. It is often the hardest Strategic Professional paper after SBL.
How long should I study for SBR?
Plan 200–250 hours across 10–12 weeks. FR should be strong before you start; otherwise add 40+ hours.
Is SBR all written?
Yes — 100% constructed response, no OT questions. Two 25-mark questions in Section A and two in Section B.
Do I need to know current issues?
Yes. SBR tests current issues explicitly. Read the examiner's current-issues articles and technical articles in the months before the exam.
