ACCA guide

How to pass ACCA first time

ACCA first-time pass rates hover between 40% and 50% per paper — meaning most candidates either fail or narrowly scrape through at least one exam. What separates first-time passers isn't intelligence, it's hours of exam-standard question practice under timed conditions. Here's the plan that works.

Hours per paper

Applied Knowledge: 80–120 hours per paper. Applied Skills: 150–200 hours per paper. Strategic Professional: 200–250 hours per paper. Non-accounting-background candidates should add roughly 25% on top.

The 60/40 rule

Spend at most 60% of study time on learning content and no less than 40% on timed question practice. Most failing candidates flip this. Past-paper questions under exam timing are the single highest-leverage activity.

Mock exams

Sit at least two full mocks per paper, marked to ACCA standards, in the four weeks before the exam. Do them at your actual exam-week time of day. Review every mark you dropped — pattern-match your weaknesses.

Exam-day tactics

Read the requirement before the scenario. Allocate time strictly by marks (1.8 minutes per mark). Never leave a question blank — even a rough attempt scores 20–30% of the marks. In CBE papers, use the on-screen calculator and highlight tools you practised with.

Common first-time traps

Overstudying content and underpractising questions. Sitting three or four papers in one session without leaving recovery weeks. Skipping ACCA's own examiner reports — they tell you exactly what markers want. Relying on lectures without doing the questions in the study text.

FAQs

How many hours to pass ACCA?
Roughly 150–250 hours per Applied Skills or Strategic Professional paper. Applied Knowledge takes 80–120. First-time passers usually sit at the upper end of these ranges.
How many mocks should I do?
At least two full timed mocks per paper in the four weeks before the exam, both marked to ACCA standards.
Should I book Early or wait?
Book Early. It saves fees, and having the date locked in disciplines the study plan. You can defer once if life gets in the way.
Is ACCA harder than the LPC or CIMA?
ACCA is broader than CIMA and technically deeper at Strategic Professional level. Not directly comparable to the LPC — different profession.
