ACCA AA guide

How to pass ACCA AA first time.

ACCA AA is a written, judgement-based paper with a pass rate around 30%. The candidates who pass first time are not the ones who know the most ISAs — they are the ones who can apply them to a scenario and write concise, structured answers. Here is the plan.

Weeks 1–3: the audit framework and engagement acceptance

Start with the audit framework, professional ethics, and accepting and continuing an engagement. These topics are high-yield for Section A and often feed into Section C. Learn the ethical threats and safeguards in real terms, not as abstract lists.

Weeks 4–7: risk assessment and audit procedures

Risk assessment, internal controls, and audit evidence are the core of the paper. For every risk, practise stating the specific procedure, the evidence sought, and why it addresses the risk. Avoid generic procedures like 'check the invoices' — the examiner penalises vague answers.

Weeks 8–10: review, reporting, and special engagements

Audit review, subsequent events, going concern, and audit reports. Also cover other assignments such as prospective financial information and internal audit. These areas are smaller but predictable, and a weak area here can cost 10–15 marks.

Weeks 11–12: timed writing and mocks

Sit two full timed mocks. Section C is 40 marks in AA and often the deciding factor. Practise writing one 20-mark answer in 36 minutes. Use the examiner's report language to mark yourself. If you are not writing full answers in the last month, you are not preparing for AA.

FAQs

How many hours to pass ACCA AA?
160–210 hours across 12–16 weeks. Audit-experienced candidates can manage the lower end.
How many Section C answers should I write?
At least 15 full 20-mark answers under timed conditions before exam day.
Should I memorise ISAs?
You need to know the key requirements and principles, but the exam tests application, not recitation. Focus on 'what procedure, why' for each scenario.
What is the biggest AA mistake?
Writing everything you know about a topic instead of answering the specific requirement. AA is requirement-focused.
