CIPD Level 5 vs Level 7 — which to choose?

CIPD Level 5 (Associate Diploma) and Level 7 (Advanced Diploma) target different career stages. Picking the wrong level wastes 12–24 months. Here's how to decide.

Level 5 — the practitioner qualification

Aimed at HR advisors, L&D consultants, and mid-level HR generalists. Assignments are applied and reflective, typically 3,000–4,000 words each. Grants Associate Membership (Assoc CIPD).

Level 7 — the strategic qualification

Aimed at senior HR leaders, HRBPs, and those targeting Chartered status. Master's-equivalent assignments, 4,500–7,000 words, requiring published research engagement. Route to Chartered Member (MCIPD) and Chartered Fellow (FCIPD).

Cost and time

Level 5: £4k–£7k, 12–18 months part-time. Level 7: £7k–£12k, 18–30 months part-time.

Which to pick

Under 5 years HR experience or in a coordinator/advisor role: Level 5. HR manager or above, or targeting strategic roles: Level 7. Skipping Level 5 to jump into Level 7 is allowed and common for graduates already in senior roles.
